Chiropractic - Most Effective For Back Pain

Everybody experiences back pain at some point in their lives. Some people are affected more than others, it can be very debilitating. It may be temporary for some and chronic for others. It is often caused by poor posture habits or every day wear and tear. It may also be the result of an accident such as a car accident or sporting injury. In some cases, it is the secondary result of another disease. People are more prone to back pain who are pregnant, smokers or for individuals that regularly lift heavy objects.

Back pain is by far the most common reason for a visit to the chiropractors. More specifically, low back pain is the most common reason. It is often associated with sciatica. This is a condition where the sciatic nerve becomes inflamed resulting in shooting pain, numbness or tingling into the buttocks or leg. This irritation of the sciatic nerve is often caused at the root of the sciatic nerve which begins in the lumbar spine or low back. Spinal manipulation is effective in removing this irritation and restoring normal function to the sciatic nerve and reducing low back pain.

Chiropractic is often sought after for upper back pain as well. This is pain that is located in the upper part of the spine above the lumbar spine. It is often the result of misaligned spinal bones in this region. Chiropractic manipulation is effective in restoring normal alignment of these bones and relieving the pain. People also report having much better range of motion of the joints following treatment.

Scoliosis is another cause of back pain that is the result of an abnormal curvature of the spine. Scoliosis affects a small percentage of the population. The abnormal curvature of the spine associated with scoliosis often results in pressure on the discs and delicate nerves of the spine which causes a loss of function in the body and pain. Spinal manipulation is very effective to help correct alignment and function in those suffering from scoliosis.

Chiropractic adjustments are effective in relieving back pain and helping individuals to live a much better quality of life. Chiropractic is effective in helping individuals to avoid bed rest which can cause worse back problems.

Chiropractic is also effective to help avoid back surgery and pain medication which can both be risky. Some of the side effects of these forms of treatment can be daunting. Chiropractic is considered a safe and natural form of health care.

5 Benefits of Chiropractic Treatment

There are still many people who do not understand all the benefits that a chiropractic doctor can provide or how they can actually help you to improve your overall health. While even the traditional medical community are beginning to understand the benefits that doctors of chiropractic can provide to the medical field as a whole, many average citizens still look on chiropractors and chiropractic treatment with suspicion. There seems to be a lack of understanding on just how chiropractic treatment can be of benefit. For those who want to become informed about What chiropractic medicine can do for you here are the 5 most important benefits you can receive from a chiropractic care giver.

Increase Immune System Function. Perhaps the biggest benefit that chiropractic care has to offer is that it can improve your immune system. Since a healthy immune system is necessary to maintaining your overall health improving the function of this system is a huge benefit to your health. Studies have shown that people who use chiropractic care regularly have fewer colds and when they do the symptoms are less severe.

Helps to Manage Pain. Chiropractic care can also help you to manage your pain by helping to locate and correct serious nervous system stress, strengthen your muscles surrounding your nerves and advising you on the proper care of your body.

Can Increase Your Range Of Movement. By helping you to manage and control your pain and strengthen your muscles chiropractic treatment can often help to increase your range of movements following an accident or injury. Chiropractors will work with you to find exercises that will continue to aid you in recovering all or most of the range of movements you had before the injury or accident.

Avoid The Harmful Side Effects Of Many Drugs. Since chiropractic care is based on natural care they can help you avoid the use or overuse of pain medications and other drugs that often have serious side effects and can increase your health issues. The fewer drugs you take the less dangers await you down the road.

Get The Right Medical Attention You Need. Since chiropractic medicine deals with your overall health and well being a chiropractor often discovers health problems or conditions that are outside his realm of training. When this happens your chiropractor will refer you to a medical professional who can help you deal with these needs, helping to ensure your continued good health.

A chiropractic doctor is just one of the options available for those of you who are concerned about your health.

Chiropractic Care for the Family

Dedicated parents work hard to ensure that their families are healthy, happy and strong. Working toward a goal of overall wellbeing means pursuing regular health checks - like visiting the dentist and having your eyes checked. Maintaining optimal health involves seeking out a range of expertise, rather than focusing only on a particular treatment or discipline. The complexities of our bodies and the diverse stress factors we contend with call for a more holistic approach to healing. Chiropractic focuses on the big picture, seeking to strengthen the body's natural healing powers by optimizing the performance of its nervous system. It's an approach that can benefit every member of the family, of any age.

Addressing Everyday Wear and Tear

The goal of chiropractic care is to correct spinal misalignment for optimal wellbeing. When the bones of the spine (vertebrae) are misaligned, they may put pressure on the spinal cord - which in turn disrupts essential signals sent from the brain to every organ, cell and tissue throughout the body. Although individuals often associated chiropractic care with adult patients, the treatments can greatly assist in promoting vitality and wellbeing in young children and adolescents. Young people are often quite physically active, involved in sports, high-impact recreational activities, or learning skills for the first time - like riding a bike. Early on, our bodies experience wear and tear from what most would consider routine milestones or behaviors. Chiropractic check-ups help keep the spine in alignment, which in turn helps children maintain strong and healthy bodies that are better able to heal whatever bumps and scrapes may come.

Optimizing The Body's Performance

At every stage of life, a chiropractor's healing hands offer each family member a solid foundation for wellness. By starting care early on, children come to understand and appreciate the essential role of spinal alignment in optimizing the body's performance. Chiropractic training emphasizes this connection, helping students understand how vertebral misalignments, or "subluxations," impair the nervous system by obstructing the brain's route of communication to the rest of the body. When the spine is "blocked," the body's ability to perform well and heal itself is compromised, leaving a door open for illness and disease.

Regular chiropractic visits help launch young people on the path of lifelong wellness, granting them a clearer understanding of the role the spine plays in maintaining overall health.Just as we protect our teeth with regular cleanings and dental exams, so should we consult a chiropractor to ensure that our bodies are performing at their best. Preventative, ongoing care is a best practice at any age.

The Importance of Chiropractic Treatment In Preventing Back Surgeries

We are all suffering from different kinds of body pains and back pain is probably one of the most popular types of pain experienced by any person whether they are working or just staying at home.

If you want to know some of the important facts about the benefits of chiropractic treatment to back pains and how this condition affects the greater population, here are some of the things that you need to know.

Surgeries and No Surgeries

This is a very important fact that you need to know because based on a recent statistics, 42.7 percent of the people who consulted a surgeon first had surgeries while only 1.5 percent of people had surgeries when they consulted a chiropractor first. With this statistic, we can already find out how chiropractors really work.

Just like the aim of this medical procedure, they are aiming for zero surgeries and they only allow the body to heal itself by improving this capability. This is the main reason why a lot of people are consulting chiropractors first before they go to a surgeon. Besides, if your condition really needs surgery, they will recommend you to go to a doctor right away for immediate treatment.

Surgeries Depend on The Professional that you Consult

When it comes to popularity, back injuries are probably on the top of the list when it comes to body pains. It is also said that the surgeries of people for different back injuries will depend on the professional that you will consider first. This is directly linked on the first fact. It means that if you consulted a chiropractor first, there is a chance that you do not have to consider a surgery.

You have to remember that surgeons are supposed to conduct surgeries so when they see a problem on your back, this is the only solution that they have. On the other hand, chiropractors are professionals and experts when it comes to these kinds of problems so they have several treatments that they can use to prevent any surgeries.

Back Surgery is Not Always Needed

It is said that back surgery is not always a solution since this is probably your last resort when it comes to treatments. It means that if you visit a chiropractor right away, the chances of needing a back surgery will be lessened. You have to remember that most of the back injuries can be taken care off even without any kind of surgery.

What can I expect on my first Chiropractic visit?

Patients typically visit a chiropractor for the first time through a personal reference or a referral of another health care specialist. At the first visit, you can expect the chiropractor to complete a thorough chiropractic consultation and includes:

Patient History

In preparation for your consultation with the chiropractor, you will be asked to fill out forms that provide background information about your symptoms and condition. Types of questions the chiropractor might ask include:

  • When and how did the pain start?
  • Where is it located?
  • Is it a result of an injury?
  • What makes it better?
  • What makes it worse?

You will also usually be asked to provide the chiropractor with information on family medical history, any pre-existing medical conditions or prior injuries, and previous and current health providers and treatments.

Chiropractic Physical Examination

Once the history has been completed, your chiropractor will perform a thorough chiropractic examination. In addition to general tests such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and reflexes, the chiropractic examination will include specific orthopedic and neurological tests to assess:

  • Range of motion of the affected part
  • Muscle tone
  • Muscle strength
  • Neurological integrity

Based on the above chiropractic examination procedures, further chiropractic tests may be necessary to arrive at the assessment or diagnosis of the affected area (such as moving your leg in a specified manner, posture analysis, or the chiropractor manipulating your arm or leg).

Diagnostic Studies

Diagnostic studies are helpful for chiropractors in revealing pathologies and identifying structural abnormalities that more accurately diagnose a condition. They may or may not be deemed necessary by the chiropractor based upon the results of the history and chiropractic examination.
The most common diagnostic studies used by chiropractors include:

  • X-ray
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan
  • Laboratory tests

Many chiropractic offices can do basic x-rays, but an MRI scan and more extensive images may be referred to an outside center for which an appointment is needed.

Diagnosis

The culmination of the history, examination and diagnostic studies is a specific diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is established, the chiropractor will determine if the condition will respond to chiropractic care.

The chiropractor will explain:

  • The diagnosed condition
  • The chiropractic treatment plan (or other treatments)
  • The anticipated length of chiropractic care

Chiropractic Treatment Plan

Most chiropractors begin treatment during the patient's first chiropractic visit, although some may wait until the next appointment. Chiropractic treatment recommendations may include some or all of the following:

  • Adjustments to key joint dysfunctions
  • Modalities to improve soft tissue healing and pain control (ultrasound, electrical stimulation and traction)
  • Exercises to improve muscles balance, strength, and coordination
  • Patient education to improve posture and motor control

Other treatments may be included, such as massage, heat/cold application, and nutrition education. Importantly, at this point the chiropractor will establish specific goals for your chiropractic treatment plan.

  1. Short term goals for chiropractic treatment – to reduce pain and restore normal joint function and muscle balance
  2. Long term goals for chiropractic treatment – to restore functional independence and tolerance to normal activities of daily living

To reach these goals, the chiropractor will prescribe a specific number of chiropractic visits. An example would be 1 to 3 chiropractic visits per week for 2 to 4 weeks followed by a re-examination by the chiropractor.

At the re-examination, the chiropractor will measure the response to treatment and determine whether to:

  1. Continue chiropractic treatment if appropriate;
  2. Release you from chiropractic care if your goals have been met; or Refer you to another health care specialist if your goals have not been fulfilled.

Chiropractic For Seniors: Seven Outstanding Benefits

Many seniors are unaware of the outstanding benefits that are possible through regular chiropractic care. I have compiled a list of seven of the most frequent benefits that chiropractic care provides for seniors.

1. Pain Relief

Chiropractic care is one of the most effective and safest forms of health care to treat pain due to spinal related conditions. Chiropractic is so effective because most causes of spinal disorders are related to abnormalities of the spine and the surrounding soft tissue structures. Doctors of chiropractic are specifically trained to identify and treat subluxations (misalignments of the vertebrae) and their subsequent effect on the central nervous system. Anti inflammatory medication and pain relievers merely mask the symptoms and have many undesirable side effects.

2. Increased Range of Motion of the Spine and Extremities

Chiropractic care has been shown repeatedly to increase not only the range of motion of the spine but also in the extremities. Increasing a person's range of motion can positively and drastically affect lives in many ways. For some, an increased range of motion means being able to bend down to pick up their grandchildren. For others, it means they can garden without pain or get an extra 40 yards of distance out of their driver on the golf course. In many cases, an increase in range of motion immediately follows chiropractic adjustments. This is one of the reasons why many top professional sporting teams have team chiropractors.

3. Increased Balance and Coordination

Many problems in balance and coordination in the aging population have been shown to come from injury or degenerative changes to the cervical spine (neck region). Structures known as mechanoreceptors are located in the posterior (back) joints of the cervical spine and are responsible for providing the brain with essential information important for balance and coordination. Mechanoreceptors in cervical posterior joints provide major input regarding the position of the head in relation to the body. With aging, mild defects impair mechanoreceptors function and results in a loss of proprioception (sense of body awareness). With decreased proprioception, body positioning in space is impaired and the patient becomes reliant on vision to know the location of a limb. To compensate for the loss of proprioception (sense of body awareness) in the legs, the feet are kept wider apart than usual. Steps become irregular and uneven in length. As impairment increases, the patient becomes unable to compensate. With severe loss of proprioception, the patient is unable to get up from a chair or rise after a fall without assistance.

Studies have shown that chiropractic care can help restore balance and coordination by stimulating the joint receptors (mechanoreceptors) in the cervical spine. This stimulation is thought to restore or normalize joint receptor functioning which leads to improvements in balance and coordination. (Caranasos, MD, Isreal, MD. Gait Disorders in the Elderly. Hospital Practice. 1991; June 15:67-94.Guyton, MD. Textbook of Medical Physiology. 9th edition. WB Saunders, Philadelphia 1996; 714.)

4. Decreased Joint Degeneration

A subluxated (misaligned) spine is much like a misaligned wheel on an automobile. This misalignment will cause the spine (and the wheel) to wear out prematurely. Since all moving parts will eventually wear down over time, it is very important to get your spine aligned periodically. Chiropractic care decreases spinal degeneration and other arthritic changes by normalizing the spinal alignment and reducing spinal stress.

5. Increased Health and Well-Being

We commonly ask our patients what changes they notice once they are put of pain. Here are some regular responses we hear every day:

I feel great!

I can sleep through the night!

Now I can play in the garden!

I have so much energy!

Life is worth living now!

Yes, chiropractic is far more than mere pain relief.

Feeling good, staying healthy and doing the things that make us happy are what keeps us looking forward to each new day. Regular chiropractic care increase the quality of life and increase health and well being.

6. Decreased Incidence of Falling

Injuries due to falling are extremely common in the elderly population. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are responsible for 90% of the 850,000 bone fractures which occur annually among Americans past the age of 65. Chiropractors reduce the risk of falls by normalizing the mechanoreceptors of the cervical spine by administering chiropractic adjustments. They also prescribe stretching and exercise programs to increase strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and coordination.

7. Keeps Seniors Out of Nursing Homes

While studying at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, I had the opportunity of meeting the president Dr. Ian Coulter. Dr. Coulter was involved with many research projects studying the benefits of chiropractic care and exercise.

In 1996, he published an interesting study in the Journal, "Topics of Clinical Chiropractic" called "Chiropractic care for the Elderly."

The key points he noted in this study were:

o 44% of those who used chiropractic care reported having arthritis compared with 66% in the non-chiropractic care group

o those who used chiropractic care were more likely to do strenuous levels of exercise

o at three years follow-up, less than 5% of those who used chiropractic care lived in a nursing home while a staggering 48% of those who did not use chiropractic care did live in a nursing home

o at three years follow-up, only 26% of those who used chiropractic care were hospitalized compared with 48% of those in the non-chiropractic group

There is no need for seniors to suffer needlessly. Chiropractic provides amazing benefits and has an outstanding record of safety and effectiveness. Ask your family and friends for a chiropractor that they recommend. Take action now and make an appointment to see if chiropractic can help you!

Chiropractic Care for Neck and Back Pain

Back pain affects around 80% of the adult American population and over 50% will experience neck pain. This can be due to accidents such as automobile collisions, which may result in whiplash; a condition in which the head is jerked forward and backward quickly. It may also be due to illnesses, where the patient has reduced mobility for extended periods of time. And it may be due to poor posture, such as hunching in front of the computer or slouching when standing.

No matter the reason, adult Americans spend millions of dollars each year in search of back pain and neck pain relief.

The most common cause of lower back pain are injury or overuse of muscles, and pressure on nerve roots caused by osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, fractures, and herniated discs.

Neck ache is an equally painful condition, where the neck muscles can be strained from poor posture and from condition like arthritis. It can range from a mild ache to more serious shooting pains into your shoulder, or numbness and loss of feeling radiating down the back.

As with any medical condition, it's important to get a professional medical diagnosis to understand the cause and symptoms of the problem. However, there are a number of medical conditions, including headaches, stiffness in the neck and lower back pain that can be treated by chiropractic care.

Chiropractors offer chiropractic adjustments, which include spinal manipulation and gentle massage and invasive therapies, to help the cervical spine or neck get restored to the condition it was prior to the accident, injury, or illness. The treatment session varies depending on the kind of condition and its severity, and may include gentle or a more forceful focused pressure on trigger points.

A lot of conditions, including whiplash and headaches, can turn chronic if left untreated. The chiropractor will first determine the history of the patient and the cause of this condition through a series of questions and physical examination. He will then discuss various treatment options, including massages, injections, and lifestyle changes.

The primary focus will be to reduce or eliminate the pain factor; and then to treat the condition to prevent it worsening and to help reduce or remove it completely. Once the patient regains mobility, the next step is to help manage a healthy and stress free lifestyle through a series of gentle exercise, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments.

Neck and back pain can be addressed with the correct chiropractic care.

Who Should See a Chiropractor?

In today's day and age you can find chiropractic doctors in almost every city and town across the United States. The benefits of our practice can be experienced in every age demographic, societal bracket, gender and race. A core belief that a prescription cannot solve deep rooted health concerns, coupled with a naturalistic approach to healing and preventative care, enable doctors of chiropractic to have maximum impact on their patients overall health and success.

There are many readers out there that may not be as familiar with the practice and this article aims to fill in a basic understanding of what chiropractic doctors do.

Doctors of chiropractic are educated as primary-contact health care providers, with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the musculoskeletal system (the muscles, ligaments and joints of the spine and extremities) and the nerves that supply them. Educational requirements for doctors of chiropractic are among the most stringent of any of the health care professions. Typically, upon entering chiropractic school, applicants have already completed a bachelor degree with specialties in biology, chemistry, physics and psychology. Another four to five years of chiropractic study will be required before becoming licensed to practice.

The chiropractic adjustment (sometimes referred to as manipulation) is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the doctor of chiropractic's intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractic physician typically uses his or her hands--or like in my own practice, a gentle, small instrument--to bring alignment to the joints and bones of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient's pain. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The doctor will adapt the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients will often notice positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

Chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. I have been asked by potential patients if there are risks or side-effects of chiropractic adjustments, and I assure them that the risks associated with chiropractic are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Typically, that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours. When comparing the safety and side-effects of chiropractic care, it is important to note the risks associated with some of the most common treatments for musculoskeletal pain. Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and prescription painkillers are two examples, as these treatments may carry risks significantly greater than those of chiropractic manipulation. Here are some interesting facts to consider:

According to the American Journal of Gastroenterology, people taking NSAIDS are three times more likely than those who do not to develop serious adverse gastrointestinal problems such as hemorrage (bleeding) and perforation. That risk rises to more than five times in people age 60 and older. Regular use of NSAIDS results in about 200,000 to 400,000 hospitalizations per year. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that abuse of common prescription painkillers (such as oxycodone and hydrocodone) are among the leading causes of accidental death in the United States.

The natural approach to healthcare by Chiropractors seeks first to resolve health concerns and improve the body's ability to function without dangerous and sometimes toxic effects of over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications/painkillers.

Doctors of Chiropractic are especially well known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches. But you may not know that we care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system involving the muscles, ligaments and joints. These painful conditions often involve or impact the nervous system. The nervous system needs open lines of communication for the brain to communicate with the rest of the body systems and organ. The benefits of chiropractic care extend to general health issues as well, since our body structure affects our overall function. In my practice, along with many of my counterparts, I also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification.

Chiropractic adjustments are not only for adults. Infants, toddlers and teens can also benefit from properly alignment of the spine. I have had the opportunity to work with many young patients, my youngest being a week old! (In case you were wondering - my oldest patient to date is 90 years young). The incredible amounts of pressure that the child encounters during birth cause their first subluxation (misalignment) which can be easily corrected by gentle realignment of the spine. Setting the proper foundation for optimum spinal and nervous system growth enables the body to act as close to 100% functioning as possible starting at the earliest age.

Lastly, I often hear the misconception that once you begin chiropractic care, you must continue frequently visiting to maintain progress. Many patients chose to continue their chiropractic care beyond the initial reasons that first brought them into the office. The benefits of preventative maintenance and preventative care become apparent to most patients, and many of mine will visit (optionally) as often as once or twice a week. It should also be noted that many patients visit a chiropractor for pain or discomfort that has been happening for an extended period of time. The patients I see have usually exhausted many common medical responses and treatments. The extended amount of time that has gone by with a patient's spinal misalignment in place will not always be corrected permanently after the first adjustment. When it took your body a long time to become the way it currently is, it can take awhile to correct it! The spine can require frequent adjusting at the early and mid-stages of treatment to be effective and long-standing. It's similar to the concept of workout out at the gym... you don't go to the gym once or twice and look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. You have to train the body.

If you're seeking a natural, safe, and effective method of care to resolve your health concerns (or if you feel well, to improve your body's ability to function and prevent future problems) please visit a chiropractor today!

How does Chiropractic help?

The Doctor of Chiropractic's approach to whole body wellness focuses on natural healing without drugs or surgery. Chiropractic is the most popular form of natural health care in America today. Chiropractic adjustments allow the bones of the spine to return to a more normal position and motion. When this occurs, the nervous system functions are restored, symptoms are relieved and the natural healing process can proceed with keeping the body healthy and strong.

Chiropractic care extends throughout the body. The most common treatable ailments include: headaches, including stress and migraine, sinus, allergies and asthma problems, neck, shoulder and arm pain, sport related injuries, back and leg pain, disc herniations, digestive problems, and colic. It also works to balance the body, improve menstrual problems in women, and building up the immune system so that the body functions at its optimum peak to fight colds and other stress related physical symptoms.

Chronic or trauma related pain are usually the reasons that most people visit their chiropractor for the first time. They are seeking relief and an end to the pain for a current problem. The reasons why they stay for life, however, are many. Chiropractic is a holistic experience, it works in harmony with your body, gently providing support to your body so that you function at your best. This means that our bodies require maintenance and upkeep just like everything else and amazingly, the true success of Chiropractic comes in the months and years that follow with ongoing treatments, when we are not in pain. One begins to notice that they have more energy, improved performance in physical activities, and better resistance to disease. This healthy lifestyle is based on teamwork between you, your body and your Chiropractor.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body). "Chiropractic" comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body's inability to adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body which is functioning improperly.

The conditions which doctors of chiropractic address are as varied and as vast as the nervous system itself. All chiropractors use a standard procedure of examination to diagnose a patient's condition and arrive at a course of treatment. Doctors of chiropractic use the same time-honored methods of consultation, case history, physical examination, laboratory analysis and x-ray examination as any other doctor. In addition, they provide a careful chiropractic structural examination, paying particular attention to the spine.

The examination of the spine to evaluate structure and function is what makes chiropractic different from other health care procedures. Your spinal column is a series of movable bones which begin at the base of your skull and end in the center of your hips. Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves extend down the spine from the brain and exit through a series of openings. The nerves leave the spine and form a complicated network which influences every living tissue in your body.

Accidents, falls, stress, tension, overexertion, and countless other factors can result in a displacements or derangements of the spinal column, causing irritation to spinal nerve roots. These irritations are often what cause malfunctions in the human body. Chiropractic teaches that reducing or eliminating this irritation to spinal nerves can cause your body to operate more efficiently and more comfortably.

Chiropractic also places an emphasis on nutritional and exercise programs, wellness and lifestyle modifications for promoting physical and mental health. While chiropractors make no use of drugs or surgery, Doctors of chiropractic do refer patients for medical care when those interventions are indicated. In fact, chiropractors, medical doctors, physical therapists and other health care professionals now work as partners in occupational health, sports medicine, and a wide variety of other rehabilitation practices.

Sports Injuries and Chiropractic

Whether you are a weekend athlete or a professional, there are a few things that all athletes have in common. They want to have the best possible performance in their chosen sport, and they both can get injured.

Let's take the weekend athlete, or for that matter, anyone who enjoys exercising. Injuries happen, pure and simple. While they can be minimized, they cannot be totally avoided. If a person participates enough in any physical activity, eventually that person will get hurt to some degree. The way in which one treats his injuries determines how fast one recovers and how quickly onecan get back to the activity he enjoys.

Athletes may ask themselves why they get injured? They stretch out, and feel like they are in pretty good shape. Usually there is a very simple formula. In most cases, we play too hard, too long, or too fast. In the case of household duties such as spring cleaning, do any of us warm up before carrying those boxes into the crawl space of our ceilings? This may not seem like a sports injury, but in fact, overuse syndromes or playing full speed before we are really warmed up are the major causes of sports injuries. Simple household chores, while done cold, can mimic a sports injury to some extent.
If an athlete gets hurt, what can be done to get him back on the field? Rest is usually a good thing, but by itself, can take a very long time.

Chiropractic offers a balanced approach to the treatment and the healing of sports injuries. By using the chiropractic adjustment to return spinal segments to their normal mobility and by using physical therapy to help the supportive tissues (muscles, tendons, & ligaments), chiropractic physicians help the injured areas return to normal function. Combined with some rest to help the healing process, athletes will find their way back on the court. Afterward, better strategies for exercise and stretching will be discussed with the athlete to help him stay on the straight and narrow path to better enjoyment of his chosen sport.

Many professional athletes are utilizing chiropractic care more and more because they realize that it helps them maximize athletic performance. Articles continue to appear in major newspapers and magazines citing such stars as Arnold Schwartzeneger, former boxing champ Evander Holyfield, and football stars such as Emmit Smith and Joe Montana proclaiming the benefits that chiropractic has meant for their careers. More and more professional and college teams are utilizing care for that same reason.

If you can remember that the whole premise of chiropractic health care is to restore spinal health so that the body has the best opportunity to maximize proper function, it is not hard to understand why the Pros enjoy what chiropractic has to offer.
